Passions 21st anniversary
Passions is my third favourite tv series, behind Twin Peaks
and Tom & Jerry, and today marks the 21st anniversary of the premiere
episode airing. I rewatched it earlier, in the lunch break between lectures, to
reminisce. Such a good show.
Episode 1 introduces the key players at the core of the psychodrama set in the seaside village of Harmony. You’ve got the working class Lopez-Fitzgeralds
(pictured) and their friends, the Russells and the Bennetts, and of course you
have the absurdly wealthy Cranes who reside in the mansion on the hill and
delight in taunting the locals and flaunting their power. Oh, and there’s a witch
who everyone believes a batty but harmless old lady. She brings a doll to life named
Timmy who drinks cocktails. They’re pretty important to the goings on. Tabitha,
the witch, is often summoning demons from hell to aid her in creating havoc. She/they
cause devastating events that the townsfolk misconstrue as natural disasters. Tabbi
loves just messing with people too, breaking up couples and stuff, inciting
jealousy and rage, watching them suffer. Timmy’s got a bit of a soft spot for
doing good, so he often tries to counteract her evil doings. That causes a little
tension between them at times, but they really do have a beautiful relationship.
There are about 2200 episodes. I tried to watch them all
once, but only got through about 1600.
Happy 21st anniversary, Passions.
